Burnley seek culprit in Drogba incident

Burnley chairman Barry Kilby has warned that the club will “act with the utmost severity” if the person responsible for throwing a coin at Didier Drogba on Wednesday night is identified.

The Clarets’ 5-4 penalties win over Chelsea in the Carling Cup fourth round has been overshadowed by the incident involving the Chelsea forward.

After celebrating the Blues’ opener in the 27th minute, Drogba threw a coin which appeared to come from the direction of the Burnley fans back into the crowd and also appeared to gesture at the away fans.

Clarets chairman Kilby said he was proud of the club’s following of 6,100 but is determined to help root out the perpetrator.

“We take seriously any incident that might tarnish our good name and if the culprit who allegedly threw a coin can be identified, the club will act with the utmost severity,” he said in a statement issued by the club.

“We are also happy to co-operate with any inquiry into the incident, either by the FA or Chelsea Football Club.

“In closing we do not believe this matter should detract from one of the club’s most memorable nights in recent times.”

The Football Association earlier charged Drogba with violent conduct and confirmed that they have written to both clubs requesting any information on missiles thrown at Chelsea players by the Burnley section.
