Gerard Doherty was the hometown hero as his penalty save in the shootout put Derry through to meet Galway United away in the last four of the FAI Ford Cup after this marathon quarter-final replay at the Brandywell.

Doherty made the only save in the shootout from Denis Behan as all five Derry players - Kevin McHugh, Thomas Stewart, Kevin Deery, Gareth McGlynn and Mark Farren - scored from the spot after 120 minutes of stalemate.

Derry edged a lacklustre first half with Deery bringing a comfortable save from Mick Devine the only chance of note.

Sammy Morrow then missed a sitter on 75 minutes when through one-one-one with Devine, shooting straight at the keeper.

Cork striker Behan had the best chance in extra-time when he brought a good stop from Doherty, who would then thwart Behan again shootout to put Derry through.
