Keegan: Owen needs more time

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan admitted his side’s Barclays Premier League against Manchester United is likely to come soon for striker Michael Owen.

The Magpies captain has not featured in any of the club’s pre-season fixtures because of a calf problem.

Owen has now returned to training but Keegan confirmed he has no intention of rushing the 28-year-old back before he was ready.

“Michael is back in training but I think to be honest Manchester United will come a bit early,” Keegan told www.nufc.co.uk.

“It’s no good trying to kid people. He just need a week in with the group doing all the things he needs to do and we’re not going into that into him now so I think it’s very, very doubtful.

“It would be crazy on our part to try and short cut it because it’s Michael Owen. We treat him the same any player.”

Everton defender Joleon Lescott admitted he has an added incentive to get three points against Blackburn in their opening fixture.

Newly appointed Rovers manager, Paul Ince is an old friend of the Blues defender ever since they played together at Wolves and Lescott is keen to get one over on his former team-mate.

“He was great for me personally and especially the team. He’s a born leader so he could only help,” he told www.evertonfc.com.

“I’m not surprised he’s gone into management and found his way to the Premier League. I’m surprised he didn’t start his career there but I’m pleased he’s here now and I wish him all the best – apart from Saturday.

“There will probably be a bit more aggression with Incey in charge but they’ve always been a good team, solid at the back, who pass and play the right way. It’s going to be a tough game for us.”

Gareth Southgate is hopeful of tying up a deal to sign Arsenal defender Justin Hoyte although he said it is unlikely a deal will be done before their season against Tottenham.

He said: “I think it’s unlikely that it will be done by Saturday but we will make every effort. He’s a young player who has a good pedigree and has had a good schooling with Arsenal.

“I’ve seen a fair bit of him and I’ve spoken to lots of players, managers and coaches who’ve worked with him and got very positive feedback.

“He is someone who needs to get out and play. We feel we can work with him and try to improve him as a player and we very much hope we can secure his signature.”
