A Ryan Guy goal gave St Pat's a comfortable win in a one-side UEFA Cup first qualifying round, first leg clash in Riga.

Any chance of Olimps, bottom of the Latvian league, causing an upset ended on eight minutes when ex-Fulham striker Andrejs Shtolcers was sent off for headbutting St. Pat's defender Stephen Paisley.

St. Pat's ran then game thereafter but only had a Derek O'Brien shot that clipped the bar on 40 minutes to show for their first half efforts.

Glen Fitzpatrick should have given St. Pat's the lead on 74 minutes when, racing through from Mark Quigley's pass, he rounded the keeper only for his shot to be taken off the line by the retreating Ilic Kandov.

But John McDonnell's side finally scored two minutes later when Gary Dempsey floated a cross to the far post and American winger Guy rose to head home.

The return is at Richmond Park on Thursday fortnight.
