Government to establish welfare officer for Irish footballers

The Department of Foreign Affairs is to part-fund the establishment of a welfare officer for Irish footballers who fail to make the grade at professional soccer in Britain.

Minister Michael Martin says there is growing concern at the plight of young players who do not succeed professionally and suffer ongoing hardship through lack of education and training.
