A Ciaran Martyn header and an own goal from Stephen Brennan eased classy Derry to a second win over St. Pat's in four days to get their Setanta Sports Cup challenge back on track.

Despite five changes, Derry started much the better and should have been in front on 19 minutes.

Paddy McCourt, an early substitution for Owen Morrison, put Martyn through on goal, but the big midfielder, having skipped past keeper Brendan Clarke, blasted the ball against the bar with the goal gaping.

Alan Kirby shot into the side netting from an acute angle for St. Pat's, but it was only a reprieve as Derry deservedly took the lead on 37 minutes.

Niall McGinn set up Gareth McGlynn to cross for Martyn to head home.

McGinn skipped away down the right to cross for the second goal on 48 minutes. McCourt's volley was parried by Clarke, but the ball rebounded into the net off defender Brennan.

Linfield beat Glentoran 3-1 at The Oval in the other game to go three points clear at the top of Group 2.
