Emile Heskey ended a 20-match goal drought to give 10-man Wigan a vital half-time lead in their Premier League relegation showdown with Bolton at the JJB Stadium.

The Latics had Jason Koumas dismissed after just four minutes for a challenge on Gary Cahill that could lead to an appeal as referee Steve Tanner may adjudge he made a mistake.

Steve Bruce’s side then had the majority of the play, with Heskey hooking home a 34th-minute volley for his first goal since August 18.
