Middlesbrough 0 Cardiff 2
Cardiff midfielder Peter Whittingham produced a stunning finish to set his side on their way to a fairytale FA Cup semi-final trip to Wembley.
Whittingham curled a ninth-minute shot past the helpless Mark Schwarzer to pave the way for another major shock, and defender Roger Johnson completed the job with a 22nd-minute diving header.
Boro were awful and mustered little at the other end – Stewart Downing’s 61st-minute free-kick, which flew just over the bar, representing their best effort.
With Johnson having replaced Downing on the left and the England international occupying the other flank, Boro fought for a way back into the game, but to little effect.
Hasselbaink departed to warm applause from both sets of fans when he was replaced by Thompson 13 minutes from time with the travelling supporters preparing to launch their celebrations in style.
Huth found himself employed as an emergency striker as Boro went for broke, but the service was simply not good enough for his side to set up a tense conclusion.
Thompson might have added to the misery with five minutes remaining, but headed another Whittingham free-kick straight at a grateful Schwarzer.
