Martin O’Neill does not believe an intention to focus on the senior side cost him the England job in 2006 – but the Aston Villa boss looks no closer to throwing his hat into the ring this time after seemingly backing the claims of Jose Mourinho.

O’Neill was interviewed for the role before Steve McClaren’s appointment but instead took over at Villa Park, with many believing a reluctance to devote himself to issues beyond the England team counted against him.
