Michel Platini is understood to have dropped plans for domestic cup winners to qualify for the Champions League in a compromise which is set to see three Premier League teams handed automatic spots in the competition.

The UEFA president has thought to have traded the scheme in return for securing a deal where from 2009 six spots in the group stage are reserved for league champions from the bottom 40 countries in Europe.
