Philippe Senderos returned from a domestic suspension to start at the centre of defence, with veteran Brazilian Gilberto rested to the bench as Tomas Rosicky started in midfield.

Croatian striker Eduardo Da Silva was among the Arsenal substitutes, along with Theo Walcott and recent signing Lassana Diarra.

Sevilla – coached by Tottenham target Juande Ramos – had a familiar face in their starting XI, as former Spurs striker Frederic Kanoute looked to get one over his old adversaries.

Former Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz was on the bench.
