Sorensen positive despite injury
Aston Villa goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen is confident he will return to action sooner rather than later after revealing his hamstring injury is not as serious as initially feared.
The Denmark international gave Villa manager Martin O’Neill cause for concern after limping out of Wednesday’s game with Toronto after 35 minutes.
But Sorensen has only sustained a slight strain to allay fears he could face a lengthy spell on the side-lines, although it remains to be seen whether he will be fit for the Barclays Premier League opener with Liverpool on August 11.
Sorensen said: “The news is a lot better than I thought it would be. When I did the injury, I really thought it might be something serious.
“But we’ve had a look at it and it’s just a slight strain, so I shouldn’t be out of action for too long.
“It’s too soon to say what the timescale might be yet, but the good news is this is not a serious injury.”
Sorensen has been Villa’s number one for the past four seasons but a doubt remains over his Villa future as he has entered the final 12 months of his current contract and has not been offered a new deal.
O’Neill has been linked with several keepers as possible replacements including Bolton’s Jussi Jaaskelainen although nothing concrete has materialised.
