AZ Alkmaar moved into pole position in the race to win the Eredivisie today after defending champions PSV Eindhoven slipped up once more.

Ronald Koeman‘s PSV started the day two points clear of AZ and Ajax but that lead has evaporated and the league enters its final round next weekend with all three teams sitting on 72 points – but AZ have the best goal difference.

PSV could only manage a 1-1 draw at FC Utrecht and Louis van Gaal‘s AZ capitalised by beating Heerenveen 3-1.

Ajax were convincing 5-2 winners against Sparta Rotterdam in Amsterdam thanks in part to Wesley Sneijder’s double.

Fourth-placed FC Twente claimed a late 1-1 draw at Vitesse Arnhem, Feyenoord also tied with NEC Nijmegen and Roda JC ensured themselves of a place in the UEFA Cup play-off spots thanks to a 2-0 win at NAC Breda.

FC Groningen will also compete for a place in European football‘s second tier tournament even though their game at already-relegated ADO Den Haag was abandoned after 48 minutes due to crowd trouble.

Excelsior will definitely play in the relegation play-offs after a 3-2 defeat at Heracles and will be joined by RKC Waalwijk who drew 1-1 against Willem II.
