Newcastle slipped out of the UEFA Cup with barely a whimper as AZ Alkmaar completed a remarkable fightback.

Shota Arveladze reduced the 4-2 deficit on 14 minutes and when Danny Koevermans put them ahead on the away goals rule with a 56th-minute header.

Kieron Dyer had earlier fired agonisingly wide after rounding goalkeeper Boy Waterman, who saved from Obafemi Martins with seven minutes remaining before Scott Parker had an 88th-minute equaliser ruled out for a foul.
