Agbonlahor undecided after Nigeria call

Aston Villa winger Gabriel Agbonlahor has been included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for their African Nations Cup qualifier with Uganda later this month.

Aston Villa winger Gabriel Agbonlahor has been included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for their African Nations Cup qualifier with Uganda later this month.

The England U21 player will discuss the situation with his father before making any decision on his international future.

Agbonlahor’s call-up into the 37-man squad is reward for a fine first full season with Villa, for whom he was an ever-present in the starting line-up before being relegated to the substitute’s bench against Fulham.

Agbonlahor, 20, told the club website avfc.co.uk: “It’s the first I’ve heard about being named in the squad, though there has been talk in the past about Nigeria.

“If I get a call-up for the game against Uganda, I’ll discuss it with my dad before making any decisions, but at the moment I’m concentrating on Villa and the England U21s.

“When I was linked with Nigeria earlier this season, I said I wouldn’t rule anything out in the long run and that’s still the same. I’ll just have to see what happens.

“It’s very flattering, to be honest. Every player wants to play international football and I’m no different.

"I love playing for the U21s and one day I want to play senior international football.”
