Robson lands prestigious award

Bobby Robson will receive the International Personality Award at tomorrow’s Eircom/FAI International Awards in Dublin.

Former winners of the award, presented for their outstanding contribution to international football, include Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore, Eusebio, Michel Platini and Franz Beckenbauer.

Robson, currently the Republic of Ireland international football consultant, has achieved great distinction as a player and a manager during a 50-year career.

“I am delighted to be receiving this award, especially when I look at the list of those who have received this accolade in the past,” said Robson.

“It reads like a who’s who of international football, and I am honoured to given a place among them.”

Robson’s honour comes after a difficult year for the 73-year-old in which he had a small brain tumour removed last August.

“I have enjoyed my time so far with the Irish team,” added Robson, who will be on hand for next Wednesday’s Euro 2008 qualifier with San Marino at the Serravalle Stadium.

“The level of support I received from the FAI, and in particular the Irish people, during my illness last year was a great boost to me and I want to thank everybody for their good wishes.”
