Calderon applauds Beckham
Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has hailed LA Galaxy-bound David Beckham as a “gentleman” – but made it clear he believed the 31-year-old former England captain was no longer part of the club’s plans.
Calderon said: “We have to thank Beckham for being a gentleman in the four years he has been at Real Madrid. Beckham’s agent told us that they had a very interesting offer and in the end, it has been the best situation for both parties and we must celebrate it.”
A two-year contract extension with Madrid had reportedly been on the table before the former Manchester United star committed himself to LA.
However, Calderon seemed to indicate that Beckham’s days had been numbered anyway in the Spanish capital.
“The coach (Fabio Capello) has proved that he is not counting on several veteran players and one of those is Beckham,” said Calderon.
Beckham will see out the 2006-07 season with Madrid before moving to Los Angeles.
