Reds launch bid for McCarthy

Hamilton manager Billy Reid has confirmed that Liverpool have made an offer for 16-year-old Jamie McCarthy.

The young attacking midfielder has attracted attention from several clubs since making his first-team debut against Queen of the South in September.

He has just started a trial with Reading, and Reid said: “Liverpool have made an offer for Jamie but he has not refused or accepted as yet.”

McCarthy spent last week on trial at Melwood and as a result of his performance the Anfield club tabled their undisclosed offer to Scottish Division One side Hamilton.

However, the teenager is leaving his options open and will spend the next few days training with Liverpool’s Barclays Premiership rivals.

Reid said: “Jamie is at Reading for the next couple of days and I’m on my way there now.

“Reading is a well-run team, as are Liverpool. But there is so much interest in Jamie just now and we’re not in a hurry to sell him. He is just going to take it as it comes and make the right decision for himself.”

At only 16 years and 55 days old, McCarthy became the youngest goalscorer in Hamilton’s history when he netted against Livingston in the Tennent’s Scottish Cup at the weekend.
