Sheffield United have signed Leeds defender Matthew Kilgallon for an initial fee of £1.75m (€2.6m), which could rise to £2m (€3m).

Kilgallon, 23 today, has agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract after becoming the Blades’ first signing of the January transfer window.

Kilgallon becomes the third player to move to south Yorkshire from Elland Road after Rob Hulse and Ian Bennett joined the Blades following their promotion to the top flight.

The Leeds trainee joins on the same day winger Paul Ifill departed Bramall Lane for Crystal Palace in a £750,000 (€1.1m) transfer.
