Shay Given is struggling to make Newcastle's St Stephen's Day trip to Bolton after aggravating a groin injury.

The Irishman was forced to leave the field late in Saturday's 3-1 Barclays Premiership victory over Tottenham and Pavel Srnicek, the man who replaced him nine years after making his last appearance for the club, is on stand-by with Tim Krul having been recalled from as Christmas break in Holland as Steve Harper continues his recovery from groin surgery.

Damien Duff (knee) could return, but Michael Owen and Charles N'Zogbia (both knee), Shola Ameobi and Olivier Bernard (both hip), Craig Moore (hamstring), Titus Bramble (calf), and Stephen Carr (foot) remain on the sidelines.
