Vassell's Villa exit was a shock - Barry

Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry has hinted striker Darius Vassell was forced out of the club under former manager David O’Leary‘s regime.

Barry believes it was not Vassell’s decision to quit Villa in the summer of 2005 and join Manchester City, who play Martin O’Neill’s side tonight.

Vassell is a Villa fan but was sold by O’Leary for £2m before coming back to haunt his previous club with four goals in three games last season.

Barry told www.avfc.co.uk: “I think moving away from Villa was probably a big decision for Darius and he was probably a little upset when he was eventually told he’d be moving on.

“I’m not sure of the details – but I’d be surprised if he asked to leave.

“It was a bit of a shock for Darius and it probably took him a while to get used to things. So, yes Darius was upset but he’s at a big club in Manchester City and he’s enjoying his football.”

Barry added: “Darius will enjoy coming back because he’s a big Villa fan as are his family. He haunted us a few times last season, so we’ve got to be on our guard this time.

“His season has been a bit indifferent because of injuries but he’s slowly got himself involved and he’ll be looking to play a big part at Villa Park.”
