A point gained by Drogheda and two most definitely dropped by Derry who had Kevin McHugh sent off as they slipped six points behind Shelbourne who visit the Brandywell on Tuesday night.

Derry created the few chances tonight in a cagey opening with both Ciaran Martyn and then Darren Kelly putting headers over the Drogheda crossbar.

But it was Drogheda who wasted the best chance of the first half on 37 minutes when Gavin Whelan shot against the legs of David Forde having been put through one-on-one from Declan O’Brien’s clever flick.

McHugh shot against a post on 68 minutes before being shown a straight red card five minutes later for an off-the-ball clash with Drogheda defender Graham Gartland.

Drogheda have now taken four points form two games at the Brandywell and remain well in contention for Europe.
