Nyatanga move could be permanent - Davies

Derby manager Billy Davies has confirmed defender Lewin Nyatanga’s loan move to Sunderland could become permanent.

Derby manager Billy Davies has confirmed defender Lewin Nyatanga’s loan move to Sunderland could become permanent.

The 18-year-old has joined the Black Cats on loan until January and goes straight into the Sunderland squad which plays Barnsley at the Stadium of Light tomorrow.

But Nyatanga’s stay on Wearside could become permanent with any deal possibly linked to Davies’ desire to sign Jon Stead, currently on loan at Derby from Sunderland, on a long-term basis.

Davies said: “Lewin has gone on loan until January 2 to get some games under his belt and as for what happens between now and then we will have to wait and see.

“I would never say never to a permanent transfer but all I can say at the moment is that he is going on loan.

“Lewin seems to revel in a back-three situation but we are playing a back four at the moment which makes it difficult for young Lewin to come in.”
