Coleman plans Volz talks

Fulham boss Chris Coleman is ready to reopen contract talks with Moritz Volz.

Volz’s current deal expires at the end of the season and Coleman is desperate to keep a player who he sees as a key figure in the club’s future.

The German right-back – a cult figure at Craven Cottage after revealing he cycles to home games – wants to stay at Fulham.

Wages have proved the stumbling block in negotiations so far but Coleman is hopeful an agreement can be reached.

He said: “I’d love Moritz to sign a new contract and we’ll go back to the negotiating table with him. He's a young player we desperately want to hold onto. But it’s got to be fair to both sides.

“He’s been terrific. Liam Rosenior has been playing at right-back so Volzy has sometimes been in the reserves.

“Occasionally I’ve asked him not to play because of injury but he’s wanted to. He’s been doing extra training.”

Fulham’s injury crisis saw Volz start in midfield against Tottenham and Chelsea and Coleman is delighted by the way the 23-year-old has adapted.

He said: “Moritz has done very well. He’s in midfield because he’s got great legs. He’s got great energy and gets around the park. He might not be able to hit 60-yard passes but he battles away.”
