Reid right for Staunton

Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has recalled Charlton midfielder Andy Reid and handed a senior call-up to West Brom defender Paul McShane.

Staunton has named his squad for next month’s Euro 2008 qualifiers against Cyprus and Czech Republic and has included under-21 international McShane, 20, in his 25-man squad.

Reid was left out of the previous squad as he struggled for first-team football but has since left Tottenham to join the Addicks.

Preston centre-half Sean St Ledger has retained his place in the squad selected to face Germany earlier this season.

Staunton told the Football Association of Ireland website, www.fai.ie: “Paul is an excellent prospect and he has greatly benefited from his move to West Brom after successful loan spells at Walsall and Brighton last season.

“We are developing a team for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign and I want players like Paul battling to be part of that.

“While we want to win every game and will be trying hard to qualify for Euro 2008, the main priority is building a squad capable of mounting a serious challenge in two years’ time.”

October 11: Kenny (Sheffield United), Henderson (Brighton), Colgan (Barnsley), Andy O’Brien (Portsmouth), Dunne (Manchester City), O’Shea (Manchester United), Finnan (Liverpool), Carr (Newcastle), St Ledger (Preston), McShane (West Brom), Douglas (Leeds), S Reid (Blackburn), Kilbane (Wigan), McGeady (Celtic), Ireland (Manchester City), Miller (Sunderland), Kavanagh (Sunderland), A Reid (Charlton), Elliott (Sunderland), Duff (Newcastle), Lee (Ipswich), Keane (Tottenham), Doyle (Reading), Morrison (Crystal Palace), Alan O’Brien (Newcastle).
