Celtic midfielder Thomas Gravesen admits he was to blame for the 3-2 defeat by Manchester United in last night’s thrilling Champions League Group F opener at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old Dane lost possession to Michael Carrick in the lead-up to Louis Saha’s second goal after Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink’s opener had given visitors a shock lead.

Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura equalised with a delightful free-kick just before the interval but moments after the restart Gravesen lost the ball to Paul Scholes, which allowed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to slam home the winner.

The Celtic midfielder said: “I think it’s easy to see why we lost, because of my mistakes.

“I can only hold my hands up and say I’m the player who cost us the game.

“For me personally, this is a massive disappointment. I made two massive mistakes and that made it very difficult for my team.”

He added: “We put in some unbelievably good crosses and made a lot of good attacks but I spoiled it all. I feel awful about that.”
