Late Paisley strike puts Longford through

Stephen Paisley missed a first-half sitter before putting Longford through to the quarter-finals of the FAI Carlsberg Cup with a late, late winner.

With this third round replay looking set for extra-time, left-back Paisley latched onto Alan Kirby’s cross from the right and found the net off a post with a low left-foot strike with 85 minutes played.

Longford dominated a dreadfully poor first half, wasting the only clear-cut chance on 31 minutes.

John Martin collected Steve Gough’s short corner to thread the ball through to Paisley only for the big defender to shoot straight into the arms of Blues’ keeper Ben Spicer.

Despite playing much of the game on the back foot, Blues had a gilt-edged chance of their own on 55 minutes, but substitute Ian Fraher volleyed wide.

Then, right at the death, Blues might have levelled but Town keeper Mick Dempsey was equal to Robert Brosnan’s header from Fraher’s corner.
