Juve lost to Napoli 5-4 on penalties after a thrilling tie ended 3-3 with Alessandro Del Piero netting twice for the Turin giants on the day when he was omitted from the squad named by new Italy coach Roberto Donadoni for the Euro 2008 qualifiers with Lithuania and France.

Juve, relegated to Serie B for match-fixing, now effectively are eliminated from the race for European football for next season as well as this term.

Serie A club Udinese were also eliminated at the third-round stage by Serie B's Arezzo who won a penalty shootout 6-5 after the match finished 1-1.

Messina beat Lazio 4-3 after extra time and Brescia eclipsed Cagliari 1-0.

Genoa beat Modena 3-1 after extra time while Triestina saw off Atalanta.
