New deal for Cole

Andy Cole has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Manchester City.

The 34-year-old striker scored 10 goals in 21 starting appearances last season after joining City on a free transfer from Fulham.

A knee injury ended his season early in February but City boss Stuart Pearce saw enough in the former Manchester United and England star to extend his stay at Eastlands.

Cole told the club website, www.mcfc.co.uk: “I think when I came here last year a lot of people were not sure how it would work out for me here, but I’m happy with the way it has gone.

“I was pleased with how it was going for me before the injury, but that’s the nature of football. But to sign for another year, and have the chance to carry on playing, is very nice.”

Cole expects to be ready to start next season after recovering from his injury.

He added: “I’m getting there and I’m thinking about the first game of the season. I want to get through pre-season unscathed but my main aim is to be ready for the first game of the season, home or away, whoever it’s against.”
