Dublin too strong for plucky Monaghan

Monaghan United 2 Dublin City 4 (After extra-time)

First Division strugglers Monaghan pushed Dublin City all the way before succumbing in extra-time as the Vikings advanced to the third round in this epic FAI Carlsberg Cup replay at Century Homes Park today.

Robbie Collins, played in by Paul Shiels, fired Vikings into a 12th minutes lead.

But lowly Monaghan hit back to level on 25 minutes when midfielder Shane Harte beat Gary Rogers with a stunning free kick.

Vikings were back in front four minutes before half-time when Paul Crowley’s superb crossfield ball found David McGill who scored from close range.

McGill and Harte were then sent off by referee David McKeon on 71 minutes after the latter retaliated to a foul on him.

In late drama, Monaghan substitute David Lee surged through the Vikings defence to level again and force extra-time.

But Damien Brennan, in the first minute of extra-time, and David Freeman, on 117 minutes, scored to seal Vikings' passage.
