Derry climb to second with away win

Ciaran Martyn hit the only goal of the game to lift Derry up to second place in the Premier Division table.

Man-of-the-match Martyn had brought the game to life when diving to head over from Killian Brennan’s cross on 18 minutes as Derry failed to get any reward for their positive start.

Town came into the match approaching half-time and Dessie Baker twice came close, on both occasions bringing decent saves from David Forde.

In a tight second half, Derry got their winner on 72 minutes when Martyn got on the end of a Pat McCourt free-kick in from the left to volley past Shay Kelly.

Town substitute Dave Mooney came within inches of an equaliser six minutes from time but his lob was just over.

Derry finished with a flourish, though, and Town keeper Shay Kelly had to make two late stops from O’Flynn.
