Blues appeal for derby-day calm
Birmingham have appealed to supporters to be on their best behaviour for the remainder of the season ahead of Sunday’s crunch Barclays Premiership derby at Aston Villa.
Previous derby clashes have been marred by ugly scenes involving rival groups of fans in and outside of Villa Park and St Andrews, particularly during Blues’ first season back in the top flight.
City are aware of what is at stake during the next month with Steve Bruce’s side battling to extend their four-season stay among the elite.
But they are urging fans to stay calm whatever the outcome.
A club statement said: “Everyone involved with Birmingham City Football Club realises that our remaining fixtures are arguably the most important run of fixtures in the club’s recent history.
“The club would like to reiterate the important role our fans play when attending matches – be it home or away – so far as that they represent the club in a correct and proper manner.
“We, of course, realise that the vast majority of our fans conduct themselves impeccably but there may be a minority that may look to take advantage of the high profile nature of our remaining games.
“Therefore we would wish to highlight the fact that should any disorder of any type occur – home or away – it will result in the club facing a number of disciplinary charges from the Football Association which, needless to say, at this stage of the season we can ill afford.
“The club would like to take this opportunity to thank the supporters for their fantastic support this season and we look forward to hopefully retaining our Premier League status for 2006/2007.”
