Bayern stumble reopens title race

Werder Bremen opened the door for Hamburg to re-enter the Bundesliga title race by beating leaders Bayern Munich 3-0 on Saturday.

The result means Hamburg, who host Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday, can pull to within four points of Bayern on Sunday with a win.

Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn arrived in Bremen less than 24 hours after finding out he would not be Germany’s starting goalkeeper at the World Cup.

Kahn watched team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger put the ball into his own net to gift Bremen a 33rd minute lead.

With Bayern chasing the equaliser, Bremen put the game out of reach with strikes in the 79th and 80th minutes from Daniel Jensen and Tim Borowski.

Bremen gave themselves a flicker of hope of catching Bayern because they have moved level with Hamburg on 59 points.

Hertha Berlin boosted their UEFA Cup prospects with a 2-0 win at relegation-threatened Kaiserslautern after a first-half goals from Marko Pantelic and Gilberto.

The winners are now fifth, while Lautern missed a chance to climb out of the bottom three after Wolfsburg, who occupy the last position of safety, fell 3-0 at second-bottom Cologne.

Matthias Scherz and second-half substitute Patrick Helmes scored while an Hans Sarpei own goal secured the win for Cologne, who are now six points from safety.

Stuttgart are seventh on 39 points after Denmark striker Jon Dahl Tomasson’s goal gave them a 1-0 triumph over Nurnberg.

Hannover and Mainz shared the spoils in a goalless draw.

Bayer Leverkusen prevailed 2-1 at Borussia Dortmund after strikes from Dimitar Berbatov and Paul Freier with Markus Brzenska accounting for Dortmund’s goal.

Heiko Westermann’s 68th minute strike was enough to earn Arminia Bielefeld a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
