Cork fight to stay second with win

Cork City 2 Longford Town 1

Cork City 2 Longford Town 1

John O’Flynn scored twice, but champions Cork had to hold on at the death to earn the three points to stay second in the table.

O’Flynn began and finished off a good move involving Roy O’Donovan and Neale Fenn, before blasting to the roof of the net for the lead goal on 20 minutes.

City then lost keeper Mick Devine with a knee injury eight minutes later and he's out of Monday’s Setanta Sports Cup semi-final with Shelbourne back at Turner’s Cross.

O’Flynn punished a defensive blunder by Stephen Paisley to round Shay Kelly for City’s second on 54 minutes.

But Kevin Doherty got Town back into the match on 75 minutes and City’s reserve keeper Mark McNulty had to make a terrific late stop from Gary Cronin to prevent an equaliser.
