Owen will be ready for World Cup - Roeder

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has been told not to worry about Michael Owen’s injury.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has been told not to worry about Michael Owen’s injury.

Newcastle and England striker Owen fractured a metatarsal in his right foot in a Premiership game at Tottenham on December 31.

The 26-year-old underwent surgery on Friday to tighten a screw inserted into his foot in January.

But Newcastle caretaker boss Glenn Roeder is confident Owen will be ready for this summer’s World Cup finals in Germany.

“I had a brief chat with Michael and he is very happy. He wants everyone to know that he is very much looking forward to playing for Newcastle again this season and then for England in the World Cup finals,” Roeder told The People.

“There is no cause for concern for Mr Eriksson. This was a minor procedure and it went really well.

“I spoke to the surgeon and he said he is pleased he did it and he feels it was a complete success.

“The surgeon said it would not hold Michael back for more than three weeks and he is confident that he will play for Newcastle before the end of the season and for England in the World Cup.”
