Wiese blunder destroys Bremen Champions League dream
Juventus 2 Werder Bremen 1 (4-4 on aggregate; Juventus go through on away goals)
Tim Wiese dropped a late clanger to gift Juventus a place in the last eight of the Champions League tonight.
Werder Bremen seemed set to advance in Turin until Wiese, who was magnificent before his blunder, dropped Pavel Nedved’s harmless cross – and Emerson seized on the loose ball to stab into an empty net.
It was extremely cruel on a Bremen side, who had taken the lead after 13 minutes through Johan Micoud before David Trezeguet equalised 20 minutes into the second period.
Trezeguet’s strike cut Bremen’s aggregate advantage to 4-3, but Wiese repelled Juve’s barrage before his howler with just two minutes to go.
