Rooney sends United into lead at break
Manchester United 1 Wigan 0
Wayne Rooney broke his 12-game scoring drought to give Manchester United the edge in a pulsating Carling Cup final clash with Wigan at the Millennium Stadium.
The England man had already proved himself to be a clear danger to the Latics’ hopes of landing their first major trophy, when he crashed an early header against the Wigan bar.
But there was to be no reprieve for Paul Jewell’s men when Rooney latched onto Louis Saha’s flick and burst into thearea before beating substitute ‘keeper John Filan, who had replaced hamstring injury victim Mike Pollitt after just 14 minutes.
