Reports today suggested the FA were not going to commemorate the achievement, the one and so far only time England have won the tournament, but the sport’s national governing body insist something is in the pipeline to hail the heroes of 1966.

A spokesman said: “In this World Cup year, we are certainly not forgetting the last group of England players to have won the competition.

“We are in discussions with many of the England 1966 players and their representatives about how best to mark the anniversary later in the year, and are working closely with the Government and the German ambassador. We hope to announce definite plans soon.”

West Germany were beaten 4-2 after extra-time in the final at Wembley on July 30, 1966.
