The veteran midfielder proved his fitness in midweek by stepping off the bench in the draw against Marseille in the UEFA Cup.

Speed was one of the three changes made by manager Sam Allardyce. Radhi Jaidi and Hidetoshi Nakata both returned to the team with Bruno N’Gotty, Abdoulaye Faye and Jared Borgetti standing down.

West Ham were aiming for their eighth straight victory and manager Alan Pardew named the side that defeated Birmingham with Hayden Mullins and Danny Gabbidon recovering from knocks.

Bolton: Jaaskelainen, O’Brien, Ben Haim, Jaidi, Gardner, Speed, Giannakopoulos, Nolan, Okocha, Nakata, Davies. Subs: Walker, Hunt, Borgetti, Vaz Te, Faye.
