Ireland out of U-21 squad

Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad for this week’s Madeira Tournament.

Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad for this week’s Madeira Tournament.

The 19-year-old picked up a groin injury on club duty against Charlton on Sunday.

Waterford United midfielder Stephen Grant has been added to Don Givens’ squad.

The Republic, who won the event in 2004, take on hosts Madeira on Tuesday, followed by Finland on Wednesday and their last game will be against Portugal on Friday.
