Future looks bright for Millar's men

Roy Millar believes his Northern Ireland U21s have reasons to be cheerful as they prepare for competitive action again.

Roy Millar believes his Northern Ireland U21s have reasons to be cheerful as they prepare for competitive action again.

The U21 side face Liechtenstein in the spring in a two-legged Euro 2007 qualifier after opting out of the last tournament for economic reasons.

They began their build-up by completing a double against Israel in the space of 48 hours, winning 1-0 yesterday.

“That’s two wins and two clean sheets here, so I have to be very pleased,” said U21 manager Millar.

“It was a good goal from Richard Clarke in the first half but after that we spent a lot of time defending.

“Israel had much more possession than us and Paul Willis did well to save a penalty.”

Clarke got the all-important goal in the 38th minute to leave Israel facing an uphill task.

The Newry City youngster made the breakthrough with a clinical finish after being released by Jamie Ward of Aston Villa.

It was just the boost the team needed but they had to dig deep in an ill-tempered match.

Liverpool goalkeeper Willis showed maturity in the 72nd minute when he saved a penalty after committing the foul.
