Sacked Walsall boss Paul Merson has admitted people are expecting him to drink himself to death now he has lost his job.

The reformed alcoholic was dismissed on Monday night with the Saddlers sliding towards the League One relegation zone.

“So what are people expecting from me now? That without football I will turn to drink? No, let’s get it right; that without football I will drink myself to death,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I told them it was okay to sack me if that’s what they wanted. Having the word sacked on my CV doesn’t frighten me. I don’t believe in CVs anyway. People can judge me by what they see rather than what they read on a bit of paper.

“I just need to keep myself busy.”
