FIFA have been forced to cancel the spectacular opening gala planned for the World Cup in Berlin in June due to fears it would damage the pitch.

Opening ceremonies for World Cups have been low-key events in the past compared to Olympic Games, but FIFA president Sepp Blatter had been keen to put on a lavish show at Berlin’s Olympic stadium involving 15,000 volunteers.
