El-Hadji Diouf, Abdoulaye Faye and Rahdi Jaidi were all away on African Nations Cup duty; Kevin Nolan and Kevin Davies were suspended, and Gary Speed was injured.

Sam Allardyce brought in Ian Walker for Jussi Jaaskelainen in goal, while Tal Ben Haim returned in defence. There were also starts for Jay-Jay Okocha, Khalilou Fadiga, Hidetoshi Nakata, Jared Borgetti and Ricardo Vaz Te.

Winger Chris Eagles was included in the starting line-up for Watford as he began his second loan spell from Manchester United.

Midfielder Toumani Diagouraga and defender Jordan Stewart were brought in for Al Bangura and the suspended James Chambers.
