Rooney: We let ourselves down

Wayne Rooney has admitted Manchester United let themselves down at Birmingham on Wednesday.

Rooney’s proud record of seeing United win every time he has scored ended with the 2-2 draw at St Andrews, which came despite the 20-year-old forward netting his 11th goal of the campaign and strike partner Ruud van Nistelrooy firing home for the 17th time.

The result means the Red Devils head into tomorrow’s clash with Bolton a massive 11 points adrift of Premiership leaders Chelsea and Rooney admits they should have done better.

“It was very disappointing,” the England star told MUTV. “We went into the game full of confidence, got a great start with a goal after five minutes and then let ourselves down.”

Rooney knows United must recover from their misery quickly in order to maintain any kind of pursuit of Chelsea and is calling on the Red Devils fans to get behind the side in tomorrow’s north-west encounter at Old Trafford.

“Obviously, Wednesday was a big blow but we need to keep playing and hopefully get the win tomorrow,” he said.

“Bolton are a difficult team to play against but hopefully the fans will get behind us and we will pick up the three points.”
