Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano underwent heart bypass surgery this morning.

The 79-year-old honorary club president, a star of Real’s legendary team from the late 1950s, had a heart attack on Christmas Eve and on Monday morning had a fever which doctors revealed had left him “on the limit”.

However, following an improvement in his condition he was able to go under the knife at Valencia’s La Fe hospital.

Di Stefano inspired Madrid to win five consecutive European Cups from 1956 to 1960, netting in each final, including a hat-trick in the fifth.

He was named European Footballer of the Year on two occasions.
