Bassett leaving Saints

Southampton caretaker boss Dave Bassett has confirmed he is to leave the club following the appointment of George Burley as new head coach.

Bassett had been in charge of first-team affairs at the Coca-Cola Championship club along with Dennis Wise since Harry Redknapp stood down three weeks ago.

The former Wimbledon and Sheffield United manager will now take time to consider his next move.

Bassett told BBC Sport: “The chairman spoke to me to say I hadn’t got the job. He’s going to talk to me but I won’t be figuring in the plans.

“I enjoyed my time there but football changes very quickly. I’ll get on with life and see what doorway opens.”
