Kaka double sends Milan through

Last season’s semi-finalists AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven moved into the last 16 of this year’s Champions League after victories in their final group games.

They and German side Schalke were battling it out for the two qualifying places from Group E, but Milan beat the Bundesliga outfit 3-2.

A trademark Andrea Pirlo free-kick put Milan in front at the San Siro in the 42nd minute, but Schalke levelled through Christian Poulsen just two minutes later.

Milan regained the lead with a double from Brazilian star Kaka, and a reply from his compatriot Lincoln was not enough for Schalke, who have to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup.

In Eindhoven, Phillip Cocu’s header gave PSV a 14th-minute lead against Fenerbahce, before a late goal from Jefferson Farfan sealed a 2-0 win for the Dutch champions.

Former Barcelona star Rivaldo clinched a 2-1 win for Olympiacos at home to an under-strength Real Madrid side – who had already qualified – in Group F.

An early goal from Real’s Sergio Ramos – his first for the club – was cancelled out by Turkish left-back Erol Bulut shortly after the restart, before Rivaldo struck a late winner.

Group F winners Lyon also rested some players against Rosenborg and youngster Karim Benzama gave them a first-half lead.

Daniel Braaten headed a 68th-minute equaliser but substitute Fred grabbed a stoppage-time winner to secure Lyon’s fifth victory in the group.

In Group G, Anderlecht won 1-0 at Real Betis with defender Vincent Kompany scoring a rare goal just before half-time.

It was the first goal of Anderlecht’s group campaign – but Betis stayed third in Group G, ahead of the Belgians, for a UEFA Cup place.
