Gibson prepared to take decisive Xavier action

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson will have no qualms about sacking defender Abel Xavier if he loses his appeal against an 18-month drugs ban.

The 32-year-old Portuguese international’s career on Teesside was effectively ended yesterday when he failed to persuade UEFA there was an innocent explanation for the presence of an anabolic steroid in his system.
