King in contract talks
Tottenham officials have started negotiating a new contract with Ledley King but have yet to offer the England international a fresh deal.
The 25-year-oldâs contract will expire in 2008 but Spurs are keen to keep their skipper at White Hart Lane.
Despite reports King had turned down an offer, sporting director Damien Comolli insists a new deal has not been tabled yet.
âWe initiated talks with Ledley and his advisors,â Comolli said. âOur discussions are in the early stages and will continue in private.
âIt is totally inaccurate to say that he has rejected any offer, we havenât made one. Ledley still has two and a half years of his contract to run.â
King was given a role in midfield for England against Argentina on Saturday but plays at centre-back for his club.
He has formed a promising partnership with Michael Dawson at the heart of the Spurs defence, with Dawson appearing for Englandâs Under-21 side at White Hart Lane on Friday.
Tom Huddlestone also played in the 1-1 draw against France, with Comolli adding on the clubâs official website, www.spurs.co.uk: âI know Michael and Tom were really pleased with the way things went and also the French players.
âI talked to them after the game and they were impressed by the atmosphere and that the ground was packed. It was a very, very successful night.â
England must now get a result in Nancy on Tuesday to reach next yearâs UEFA Under-21 Championship, with Comolli adding: âI think the second leg will be equally as tight, maybe 1-1 again or 2-1 either way. It could go to extra-time.
âThe technical quality of the French midfield was great and for me, the key to qualification will be how England handle that midfield and on the other side, how France handle (Darren) Bent and (Carlton) Cole up front.â
